Happy 4th of July, Cake Decorators!

Are you planning a big celebration, or is staying in more your style? Do you ;go to live fireworks displays or do you like to hang back and watch on tv or from a distance (away from crowds)? I like finding hidden treasure spots, away from the crowds but close to the action. This takes scouting and planning, but is worth the effort. If I'm lucky, and I usually am, I will get several years of use before anyone else "discovers" my secret spot. Of course, picnics are a part of the day and evening, and deserts included.

 Disturbing Cakes

Here's a very disturbing cake.

Cupcake Decorating Queen loves baking!

About Cupcake Decorating Queen

Cupcake decorating is a blast. I'm into it. I'm just getting into it, I guess. Even though I've only baked a few cupcake batches, I've become obsessed. How long will it last? I don't know. Maybe because it's been another long winter, and I'm going a little crazy inside. Spring may usher out the cupcake decorating fad and usher in gardening and outdoors. I know it will to some extent, because I've also been cheating on my cupcake love online, searching for new plants and trees for my yard. I have big plans for growing that extend into the next 30 years. Will I continue this wonderful new love, baking cupcakes and decorating cakes? Maybe I can find some time, but I can tell you my heart longs for the outdoors, when I can sow seeds, grow gardens.

Cake Decorating, Gardens, and Planting Trees

These are my top priorities from now until fall. The ground is thawing and I'm absolutely excited about getting out there. So baking, cake decorating, cupcakes, and all that will have to be fit in when possible.

Cake Decorating With Your Kids

Become a positive role model by cake decorating with your kids.

While kitchens will get messy and cakes will flop, the experience of decorating cakes as a family will be priceless. As you begin to teach your child how to decorate a cake, don't skimp on quality cake decorating items.

Shopping List for Beginning Bakers

Stock your pantry with the basics needed to encourage your child baker, rather than overwhelming him. Here are some of the essentials you will need; you can find everything at a cake supply store:

  • Plastic or cardboard cake board
  • Cake leveling tool
  • Gel food dyes
  • A color wheel
  • Premade buttercream frosting
  • Preformed cake embellishments

I buy my baking supplies locally and online. It depends on what I need. I put a link above to a place where I buy cake supplies, if you're interested. You can check the store out or do your own research online and find a place you like. I also like to search online for stock images for decorated cakes and I refer to cake decorating books for ideas. I get online with my kids and research with them, it helps the children get ideas for their own cake decorating options. Sometimes we'll even draw a design on a sheet of paper and use it as a guide for decorating the cake. I like to start by using primary colors of gel food dyes for tinting the frosting. I'm always encouraging my kids to use a color wheel for blending colors and for shading. After the cake is baked and my child (or children, depending on who wants to participate) has finished decroating the cake, we take lots of photos and celebrate the wonderful creation, with lots of praise for the kids for doing a wonderful job!

Kids Benefit By Baking and Decorating Cakes

I found valuable benefits to baking with the kids. My children learn much more than baking is fun. It teaches them basic life skills, like being patient, completing what you start, planning skills, following directions, and joy. It's a great way to introduce kids to science and math, too. Cooking, baking, recipes, is science and math but in a really fun format.
